How Much Money Do You Need to Start Amazon Wholesale?

Everyone wants to know the magic number before they start. The honest answer is there are two very different numbers, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes I see.

Amazon wholesale setup costs (before you buy inventory)

Before you touch inventory, you need a few things in place. These are the costs most guides skip over:

  • LLC formation - You can set one up through a service like Bizee for $250 or less. You don't need a lawyer.
  • EIN - Free from the IRS website. Takes about 10 minutes online.
  • Domain and business email - Around $10-15/year for the domain, a few dollars a month for email.
  • Amazon Professional Seller account - $39.99/month. You need the professional plan to sell wholesale.
  • Software tools - Tools like Keepa, RevSeller, and AMZ Analyzer for product research and sales data. Budget around $50-100/month to start.
  • Prep center fees - If you use a prep center to receive and label inventory before it goes to Amazon's FBA warehouses, factor that into your cost per unit.

All in, you can get everything set up for under $500. That covers the legal structure, your seller account, and the tools you need to actually start working.

The real minimum to start Amazon wholesale: $5,000

Setup is the easy part. Inventory is where the real money comes in.

To have a realistic shot at building something that works on Amazon wholesale, I recommend a minimum of $5,000 for your first inventory orders. That's not the absolute floor where it becomes physically possible - you could technically order less. But under $5k you're limiting yourself in ways that make it genuinely hard to get traction.

Most of my mentees start with $5,000 to $10,000, and many start with more. The higher your starting capital, the more products you can order, the more wholesale distributors you can work with, and the faster things move.

The cash flow mistake most Amazon FBA beginners make

Here's what most beginners don't realize until it's too late: you can't spend all your money at once.

Amazon FBA works on a payment cycle. You order inventory, it takes time to arrive. Then you list it and wait for it to sell. Then Amazon pays you - but not all at once. Amazon sends payments to your bank account every two weeks, and only for what's already sold and settled.

So if you spend all $5,000 on your first order, you're stuck waiting. You can't place your next order until the first batch sells and Amazon sends the money back. During that whole window, your business isn't growing.

The goal is cash flow - money coming in from old orders funding new ones. To get that cycle going, you need to hold some capital back, not put everything into the first purchase.

The biggest mindset mistake in Amazon wholesale

A lot of people come into Amazon FBA wholesale with a private label mindset. They're looking for that one perfect product, the golden supplier, the deal that changes everything.

Wholesale doesn't work like that.

In wholesale, you don't find one product and go all in. You find as many products as possible that make sense, and you order all of them. By "make sense" I mean the profitability is there, the sales are stable, the listing is healthy, and the risk is low.

This is also why starting capital matters. One product at $500 isn't a wholesale business. Ten products at $500 each is the beginning of one. Diversification protects you when one product slows down and keeps cash moving across multiple listings and brands.

So what's the real number?

  • To get set up: under $500
  • To actually run the business: $5,000 minimum
  • What most people who build something real start with: $5,000 to $10,000 or more
